How matching works

We rank opportunities for students and applicants for employers using a short list of factors. Here is exactly what counts, and what never does.

What counts

Ranking opportunities for students

  • Resume fit: how closely your resume and profile read like the posting (largest share)
  • Skills: how many of the posting's required and nice-to-have skills you have, with full credit for skills your coursework backs
  • Field of study: how well your program lines up with the role
  • Availability: whether your available term matches the posting's start date and length
  • Responsiveness: a small factor for how often you reply to employers and follow through on what you start (student feed only)

Ranking applicants for employers

  • Skills: how many of the posting's required and nice-to-have skills you have, with full credit for skills your coursework backs
  • Resume fit: how closely your resume and profile read like the posting (largest share)
  • Field of study: how well your program lines up with the role
  • Availability: whether your available term matches the posting's start date and length

Coursework evidence

A skill backed by a course on your confirmed transcript counts fully. A skill listed only on your resume or added by hand still counts, at 85% of that credit, so students without a transcript are never left out. Course titles help describe your experience; grades and the name of your school are never used. Employers see coursework as coming from your transcript upload, not as verified by your school.

What never counts

Your school name and your grades are never ranking inputs. Neither is your name, gender, age or anything else about who you are.

A person decides

Ranking only changes the order you see things in. It never rejects anyone. A person at the employer reviews every application.

You can opt out

Students can turn ranking off at any time with the "Turn off ranking for me" button on the For you page. You will then see postings newest first, with no scores.

We also monitor hiring outcomes by school and program to catch unfair patterns. That report never changes rankings.
